The Public Library of Science (PLOS) has been a groundbreaker in publication. It was at the forefront of the Article Processing Charge (APC), and publication of articles without being constrained by print-centred notions like quarterly volumes with limited page sizes.

But as we have seen elsewhere, the APC is not providing cost-constrained open access. For one, current article processing charges prevent many researchers from participating in Open Access.

So I’m delighted to see PLOS acknowledge and respond to this with Beyond the Article, and Beyond the APC
